Gilbert was born in 1183 in Hertford,Hertfordshire,England.1   Gilbert's father was Richard de Clare and his mother was Amice FitzRobert.  His paternal grandparents were Roger "The Good" de Clare and Maud (Matilda) De Saint Hillary; his maternal grandparents were William "Mafonache" FitzRobert and Hawise de Beaumont. He had a brother and three sisters, named Richard, Aveline, Maud and Joan.  He was the second youngest of the five children.  He died at the age of 47 on October 25th, 1230 in Perres-Guirrec,Brittany,France.  He was buried on November 10th, 1230 in Tewkesbury,Gloucestershire,England.1

‌Gilbert and Isabel , Countess of Hertford were married in a religious ceremony on October 9th, 1217 in Tewkesbury Abbey,Gloucestershire,England.1   They had three sons and four daughters, named Richard, William, Gilbert, Adeliza, Amicia, Isabel and Agnes.
