Joseph was born about 1809 in Barnwell, Barnwell Co., SC.1 Joseph's father was Josiah Dicks and his mother was Sarah Johnson. His paternal grandparents were William Dicks and Miss Unknown; his maternal grandparents were Joseph Johnson and Penelope Castellaw. He had three brothers and six sisters, named Thomas, William, James, Martha, Mary, Mary Elizabeth, Ann, Sarah and Jane. He was the fifth oldest of the ten children.-
