Alta was born on October 15th, 1880 in Russell County,Virginia. Alta's father was John Floyd Vance and her mother was Leatha Lee Hess. Her paternal grandparents were James Howard Vance and Elizabeth Mc Glothlin; her maternal grandparents were Charles Hess and Polly A (Mary) Slaughter. She had six brothers and a sister, and also three siblings of unknown gender, named Melvin L, Sampson L, Bruce, George Howard, Living, Living, Eunice, Allfire, Evly and America. She died at the age of 83 on September 14th, 1964 in Richlands,Tazewell,Virginia.-
