Sarah Jane was born about 1851 in Indiana. Sarah Jane's father was David W. Shields and her mother was Elizabeth Ellen Payne. Her paternal grandparents were Joseph Shields and Sarah "Sally" Masterson. She had five brothers and four sisters, named James Alexander, Francis M., Andrew Jackson, William Edward, David W., Urana L. "Winnie", Martha A., Rowena and Orpha. She was the oldest of the ten children.-
