Alva was born on June 24th, 1907 in Monroe County, Indiana. Alva's father was George Washington Shields and his mother was Luella Richardson. His paternal grandparents were Joseph Lindsey Shields and Eliza Jane Whitsell. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Ambrose W., Fred Colon, Frank G. Shields, Goldie Cecil, Ferbia Mae, Ruby, Maude and Hespa O.. He was the third youngest of the nine children.-
