His paternal grandparents were Richard Whitaker and Elizabeth Cary; his maternal grandfather was Absalom Benton. He had six brothers and three sisters, named Eli Benton, James, Richard, Cary, Absalom Benton, Wilson Cary, Elizabeth, Martha and Margaret Green. He was the fifth oldest of the ten children.-
