Mary Ann was born on January 29th, 1856 in Worth County, Missouri. Mary Ann's father was Henry Sowards and her mother was Matilda Brumfield. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Sowards and Rosannah Spears; her maternal grandparents were John Brumfield and Mary Plaster. She had ten brothers and four sisters, named John, Henry, James, Thomas Jefferson, Charles Albert, Isaac Anderson, Franklin, Amon, Griffin, Joseph, Eliza Jane, Mahala, Martha and Anna. She was the third oldest of the fifteen children.-
