William Shanks 
William was born in 1840 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. William's father was George Shanks and his mother was Lucy. His paternal grandparents were Christian Shanks and Margaret Pearson. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Wiley, John, Catherine, Mary, Minerva and Rachel. He was the oldest of the seven children.
