Martin Van Buren was born in 1840 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Martin Van Buren's father was William Shanks and his mother was Catherine. His paternal grandparents were Christian Shanks and Margaret Pearson. He had seven sisters named Louisiana, Eliza, Cyrena Or Serena G., Amanda, Hannah H., Mary and Roxanna. He was the second oldest of the eight children.
