Louisiana was born in 1838 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Louisiana's father was William Shanks and her mother was Catherine. Her paternal grandparents were Christian Shanks and Margaret Pearson. She had a brother and six sisters, named Martin Van Buren, Eliza, Cyrena Or Serena G., Amanda, Hannah H., Mary and Roxanna. She was the oldest of the eight children.
