Ann was born about 1750 in , Charles, Maryland. Ann's father was Francis Semmes and her mother was Lucretia Chapman. Her paternal grandparents were Marmaduke Semmes and Elizabeth Clarkson; her maternal grandparents were William Chapman and Jane. She had five brothers and four sisters, named Joseph, Marmaduke, Ignatius M., Francis, Williamson, Elizabeth, Jane, Chloe and Eleanor. She was the second youngest of the ten children.-
