Jefferson was born in 1832 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Jefferson's father was Henry Pearson and his mother was Mary Or Polly Cole. His paternal grandparents were Christian Pearson and Catherine. He had five brothers and seven sisters, named Christopher, John M., Mitchell, Jackson, Stokely, Louisa, Sarah, Maria, Elizabeth, Mary, Minerva and Nunila. He was the sixth youngest of the thirteen children.-
