Her paternal grandparents were Thomas McLain and Elizabeth Doty; her maternal grandparents were Leonard Starnes and Barbara Bowman. She had five brothers and two sisters, named Elliot, Leonard Mitchell, Thomas H., Shadrack D., John B., Ruth Jane and Mary Caroline. She was the oldest of the eight children.-
