John B. was born in 1847 in Of, Hawkins, Tennessee. John B.'s father was John McLain and his mother was Elizabeth Starnes. His paternal grandparents were Thomas McLain and Elizabeth Doty; his maternal grandparents were Leonard Starnes and Barbara Bowman. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Elliot, Leonard Mitchell, Thomas H., Shadrack D., Nancy Ann, Ruth Jane and Mary Caroline. He was the youngest of the eight children.-
