His paternal grandparents were Thomas McLain and Elizabeth Doty; his maternal grandparents were Leonard Starnes and Barbara Bowman. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Elliot, Thomas H., Shadrack D., John B., Nancy Ann, Ruth Jane and Mary Caroline. He was the third oldest of the eight children.-
