Sarah was born on November 20th, 1810 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Sarah's father was William Dykes and her mother was Jennie Gallemore. Her paternal grandparents were William Dykes and Susannah Lankford. She had three brothers and eight sisters, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named Andrew Jackson, John, Clabourn, Mahala, Anna, Elizabeth, Dykes, Molly, Martha, Susan Amanda, Dykes and Dykes. She was the oldest of the thirteen children.-
