John was born in 1826 in Greene Co., TN. John's father was William Dykes and his mother was Jennie Gallemore. His paternal grandparents were William Dykes and Susannah Lankford. He had two brothers and nine sisters, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named Andrew Jackson, Clabourn, Sarah, Mahala, Anna, Elizabeth, Dykes, Molly, Martha, Susan Amanda, Dykes and Dykes. He was the fifth youngest of the thirteen children.-
