Sara was born on September 10th, 1867 in Tennessee. Sara's father was Robert Cato and her mother was Martha Jane Wells. Her paternal grandparents were Roland Cato and Nancy Vincent. She had five brothers and four sisters, named Edmund, Henry, Robert Wells, Jefferson Davis, William Hamlin, Saphronia, Martha, Julia and Fannie. She was the youngest of the ten children.-
