Stephen was born on August 1st, 1793 in Kittery, York County, Maine.  Stephen's father was David Spinney and his mother was Lydia Paul.  His paternal grandparents were Ebenezer Spinney and Phebe Cole; his maternal grandparents are Stephen Paul and Barthsahba Weare. He had seven brothers and eight sisters, named Ebenezer, Parker, David, Parker, Paul, Alvah, Joseph, Barthsehba, Lydia, Hannah, Phebe, Pauline, Lydia, Lydia and Rowena.  He was the oldest of the sixteen children.  He died by stillbirth or at birth on August 1st, 1793.
