John was born on March 18th, 1841.  John's father was Nathaniel Graves Foye and his mother was Martha Locke Dow.  His paternal grandparents are John Foye and Elizabeth Seavey; his maternal grandparents were James Dow and Mary Parsons. He had two brothers and eight sisters, named Orion, James, Mary, Ann, Elizabeth, Martha, Fidelia, Ellen, Sarah and Sophia.  He was the youngest of the eleven children.  He died as a war casualty.
