María was born about 1904 in Lajas, Puerto Rico.  María's father was Francisco Rodríguez-Olán and her mother was Jovita del Carmen Ponce de León-Rivera.  Her paternal grandparents were Pedro María Rodríguez-Torres and Ramona Olán; her maternal grandparents were José Florentino Ponce de León-Nazario de Figueroa and María Juliana Rivera-González.  She had five brothers and a sister, named Corso, José, Francisco, Minguito Ponce, Luis Ponce and María.  She was the sixth oldest of the seven children.  She died from cancer on November 25th, 1982 in Lajas, Puerto Rico.  The funeral was arranged by Funeraria Pérez.  Her burial was in Municipal Cemetery, Guánica, Puerto Rico.
