José was born about 1814 in San Germán, Puerto Rico.1   José's father was José Antonio Ponce de León-Del Toro y Quiñones and his mother was María Vicenta Martínez-Mariño.  His maternal grandparents were Zenón Martínez and María Mariño.  He had a sister named María.  He was the younger of the two children.  He died on April 30th, 1864.1
