John was born on November 8th, 1824 in Roseisle, Duffus, Morayshire.  John's father was John Laing and his mother was Elspet Cobban.  His paternal grandparents were John Laing and Margaret Junkin; his maternal grandparents were John (Ernest) Cobban and Elspeth Sandison. He had two brothers and two sisters, named William, James, Elspet and Margaret.  He was the second oldest of the five children.  He died at the age of 34 in 1858 in Duffus, Elginshire.
