Thomas was born on December 13th, 1830.  Thomas' father was John Breckenridge and his mother was Mary Breakenridge.  His paternal grandparents were Andrew Breckenridge and Elizabeth Ferguson; his maternal grandparents were John Breakenridge and Mary Langwill. He had five brothers and five sisters, named Andrew, John, William, Thomas, William, Maryanne, Elizabeth, Jane, Isabella and Margaret.  He was the nineth oldest of the eleven children.
