William was born on January 2nd, 1788 in Drainie, Scotland.  William's father was William Anderson and his mother was Marjory Adam. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Robert, James, Alexander, Isobel, Elizabeth, Helen and Elspet.  He was the sixth oldest of the eight children.
