Maria was born on February 1st, 1889.  Maria's father was Felippe Pohren and her mother was Susanna Finger.  Her paternal grandparents were João Pohren and Maria Schaefer; her maternal grandparents were Jacob (Thiago) Finger and Susanna Margarida Diebel. She had six brothers and five sisters, named Jacob, João, Henrique, Felippe, Pedro, Frederico, Maria, Catharina, Elisabeth, Anna and Maria.  She was the tenth oldest of the twelve children.
