João was born on May 22nd, 1876.  João's father was Felippe Pohren and his mother was Susanna Finger.  His paternal grandparents were João Pohren and Maria Schaefer; his maternal grandparents were Jacob (Thiago) Finger and Susanna Margarida Diebel. He had five brothers and six sisters, named Jacob, Henrique, Felippe, Pedro, Frederico, Maria, Catharina, Elisabeth, Anna, Maria and Maria.  He was the third oldest of the twelve children.
