Josiah Litchfield

    After the death of his father, Josiah Litchfield was adopted by John Allen.
    "These presents witness that the 20th of March 1657/8 Judith the wife of
    William Peakes [second husband of Judith Dennis, Josiah's mother] cknowlidged
    [sic] that her former husband Lawrance [sic] Lichfield [sic] lying on his Death
    bedd sent for John Allin and Ann his wife and Desired to give and bequeath unto
    them his youngest son Josias Lichfeild if they would accept of him and take him
    as theire Child...." (Mayflower Descendant, vol 12, p. 134). Josiah was the
    only one of Lawrence Litchfield's sons to survive him and leave children.  His
    older brother, Experience, died when he fell beneath a log he was carrying onto
    a ship.

    Josiah, son of Lawrence Litchfield, was born in 1647, in Scituate, Massachusetts. He was a la nd owner of Scituate and seems to have possessed a goodly estate. He married, February 22, 16 71, Sarah, daughter of Nicholas Baker, pastor of the First Church in Scituate. Children: Hann ah, Sarah, Josiah, Nicholas, Experience, Judith, Samuel.
    
    Was 'adopted' by John Allen of Scituate after his father's death.
    
    From 'New England Families Genealogical and Memorial, Vol. 2:'
    Josiah or Josias, son of Lawrence Litchfield, was born in 1647 at Scituate. He was given by h is father at the time of his death to John Allen who left him a legacy in land at Scituate, J une 2, 1663. He was a leading citizen in town and church, was deputy to the general court an d held other offices of trust and honor. He married Feb. 22, 1671 Sarah, daughter of Rev. Nic holas Baker, pastor of the First Church at Scituate. Children, born at Scituate: Hannah, Dece mber 4, 1672; Sarah, September 25, 1674; Josiah, mentioned below; Nicholas, February 7, 1680 ; Experience, May 25, 1683; Judith, April 25, 1687; Samuel, February 4, 1690.
