Helewise D'Oyly, who was married to William Chenduit, a member of the ancient Bucks and Oxfordshire family of the name, and on her marriage had lands in the city of Oxford and elsewhere in the county, given her by her father in frank-marriage. Soon afterwards she gave the whole to Eynsham Abbey, by two separate deeds; the latter of which occurred in the time of Godfrey the abbot, i.e. about 1180; the former in her father's life-time, who attests it.[154] The Chenduits, however, were long after a wealthy and distinguished family. Sir Ralph Chenduit bore "Azure, an acorn or, a label gules in chief," under the first two Edwards;[155] but some branches of the family used "Gules, a lion salient within an orle of acorns or."
