SUDDEN DEATH OF ARCHIE SANDLER - Jewish Times
The death occurred suddenly on Sunday, 28th March of Mr. Archie Sandier, housemaster of the King David School Hostel and teacher of senior mathematics at the King David High School. He collapsed while participating in the Big Walk which bad been organised to raise funds for the school. Mr. Sandler was educated in Vryheid and was a graduate of the Natal University where he narrowly missed a Rhodes Scholarship. He taught mathematics in Natal but gave up teaching in 1947 to go into business in Kimberley. During his business -career, however, he never lost touch with education. He became a member of the Kimberley School Board and
chairman of the Association of Northern Cape Hostels. In 1970, he Save up his business to return to his beloved profession of teaching and came to settle in Johannesburg to take up his post with the King David School.
Mr. Sandler was a man of many parts and was nationally
known for his prowess in games, teaching and administration. He was a tennis blue and half blue at cricket and represented the province at cricket and hockey. He was captain of his rugby side and became president of the S.A. Men's Hockey
Association.
From his earliest youth he an active part in Jewish affairs and while still a young man in Vryheid, already played a major; role in the communal life of the town.
He was a gabbe of the Kirnberley Shul and chairman of the Chevra Kadisha in Kimberley before he came to Johannesburg,
Mr. Sandler was fifty eight years old. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Eileen Sandler, his son Jonathan and daughter Ella, by his sisters Sarah and Frieda and by his brother Mr. Norman Sandler, Headmaster of King David High School, Linksfieid.
The funeral which took place on Monday at West Park Cemetery was attended by a large number of mourners, including leading members of Jewish communal life, the Jewish Board of Education, pupils of the King David Schools and his beloved boys and girls of the King David School hostel, where his loss will be most deeply felt.
HIS END CAME ON CHARITY WALK - Sunday Express
Mr. Archie Sandler, housemaster of King David High School hostel in Linksfield. collapsed and died last Sunday during a I 5-mile "big walk" to raise funds for the school. He told people who tried to dissuade him from taking part: "I will never
die in my bed. I'd rather do so while doing something active"
This was told to me yesterday by Mr. Norman Sandler, his brother, who is headmaster of the school.
Mr. Sandler said Archle Sandler, who was 58 had his first coronary attack 20 Years ago and had suffered from angina for several years.
"I tried ray best to dissuade him from walking, knowing his condition, but he was adamant"
"He collapsed. two miles from the finish and died immediately."
Among the people who tried to talk him out of walking were doctors. They begged him, but he refused pointblank."
Mr. Sandler was a member of one of South Africa's most distinguished teaching families. Apart from his brother, Norman brother. Max Sandler, another brother who died seven years ago, was a master at Durban High while two sisters are also in
the profession. Sarah Is acting Vice-Principal of Addington Junior School, Durban, and Frieda, who teaches commercial subjects at King David.
Mr. Archie Sandler also had a distinguished sporting record. At the age of 30 he represented Griqualand West at-cricket, hockey and tennis and captained Griquas at hockey when they were the first province to beat the touring Oxford-Cambridge
team.
At the University of Natal, where he gained a B.Sc. degree, he was also a leading sportsman, playing rugby, cricket, tennis and hockey for the university, gaining full colours for tennis and half colours for rugby and cricket,
He also played first-division cricket, hockey and rugby in Durban for Old Collegians before transferring to Kimberley.

NATAL DAILY NEWS 28/10/64
By Reg Sweet
Max Sandler, whom I shall always think of as "the sportsman's sportsman," died last night; and around the playing fields of Durban, and in the Natal, there is now a sadness which time can hardly hope to heal.
With a fortitude which was near incredible, he bore a long and tragic illness with the type of bravery for which men in other spheres are festooned with medals. He was a scholar of distinction, a schoolmaster loved by the thousands of young men who passed through his hands at Glenwood High, and a sportsman of the rarest versatility.
At hockey, he earned the highest honours: selection for South .Africa. At rugger, as a fly-half for Collegians before the war, his fame as a goalkicker was almost a legend. As a forceful batsman, he was reputed once to have hit a century in Durban senior cricket in less than three-quarters of an hour.
Two days before his death, he went to Kingsmead to watch Roy MeLean hit his remarkable century against Transvaal; and he ,walked for the last time out of the old ground with a smile which told that he had witnessed a sight that he would cherish.
Max Sandler had a capacity for work which few could comprehend. He had a pellucid brain and a fleeting pen which would combine to solve the daily cryptic crossword in 14 minutes, while others laboured with the opening clues.
As a writer and broadcaster, in both languages, he was known and respected throughout the country.
And his sense of humour, even at the end, did not desert him for a moment.
He told a story; once, which rather summed it up. A Latin scholar of wide accomplishment, he told his pupils one occasion that he regarded Caesar as the greatest man in history. He substantiated his arguments, and pointed to a student. "And who would you say," he asked, "was the greatest man in history?" "Elvis Presley, sir."Max stifled his smile. "Come here," he commanded. "And bend over."He gave the culprit a sharp one with the "persuader". Then a second. "Right," said Max,grinning now. "That's for your Elvis Presley - and while you're about it, one for Tommy Steele as well!"
Outside of the classroom, he coached students practically every day of his academic life. Languages, maths, arithmetic, they all flowed from a nimble mind.
And on scores of occasions, when he knew of difficult domestic circumstances, he gave those lessons out of the kindness of his heart with not a thought to personal reward.
Grantland Rice penned his memorable lines long years ago. They are as true of Max Sandler today as they were when he put aside his bat and rugger boots and hockey stick for the last time in a sporting career of proud achievement.
For when the One Great Scorer comes To write against your name, He marks-not that you won or lost - But how you played the game.

TRIBUTE TO NORMAN SANDLER
By Elliott Wolf
In calling on Mr Norman Sandier to address you this evening, I do so with feelings of pleasure and regret: pleasure in our having him and Mrs Sandler with us on this important occasion and in our being regaled with his fine turn of phrase and impeccable command of English; regret, however, in realizing that this is the last occasion on which he addresses us in his official capacity as Director of General Studies of the S.A. Board of Jewish Education for it is at the end of this year that he retires from this position.
Mr Sandler's association with the Board spans almost three decades. He became part of the Jewish day school movement in Johannesburg in its infancy when the schools were very different institutions from those which we know today. In those
pioneering days it was the bold thinking, enterprise and drive of men like Mr Sandler which ensured the development and growth of our schools and earned for them the very fine reputation which we enjoy today.
I cannot talk of those times with first hand authority for my experience of Jewish education begins much later when the chalutzic spirit was no longer germane. But my introduction and that of my twin brother into King David was effected by Mr Sandler who lured us away from teaching at government schools to head the departments of English and Latin in his school at Linksfield. It was a privilege and pleasure to teach under an educationist from whose experience and expertise one could learn so much. Some of his headmasterisms are legend, among them one which has always amused me: "To chew is taboo".
The many hundreds of Davidians who passed through his hands will recall many more. But more significantly will they remember his nineteen years as first headmaster of King David Linksfield during which time their school burgeoned into fame.
He was the innovator of so much that we take for granted in our schools today among them the open exchange and rapport between pupil and teacher, bold experimentation in new teaching methodology, the Standard 8 Ulpan scheme, the occasional half-holiday when Linksfield triumphed in rugby or South Africa played a cricket test at the Wanderers!
I shall miss Mr Sandier. Always only a call away when I needed encouragement, advice, support or a friendly chat, he has become, as Director, an intrinsic part of my involvement with the Board of Education. In helping to keep our schools staffed with teachers of calibre he has been of invaluable assistance to us as headmasters. I appreciate his paternal concern and interest in my welfare, exemplified by the many enjoyable walks we shared during my convalescence last year. So I shall miss him not only as a professional colleague but also as a friend whose generosity, goodwill and camaraderie I warmly acknowledge. Norman and Hilda, on behalf of all at King David High Victory Park, I extend to you our best wishes for many years of continued good health and happiness. May you, Norman, find peace and contentment, proud in the knowledge of your achievements in a life-time of service to the Jewish community.
By Mike Kessel
On behalf of the Chairman, Committee, Executive Staff, Staff and Pupils of the United Herzlia Schools I wish to thank you,. on the eve of your retirement for the tremendous contribution which you have made to the South African educational scene
and of course, and in particular to Jewish Education in South Africa.
The success of the Jewish Day School in South Africa, particularly in the case of your own beloved King David Schools must be of tremendous satisfaction to you and whilst it is correct to say that King David would not have been what it is today, without your efforts and dedication over so many years, it is also true to say that Jewish education in general in South Africa would not have been what it is without your dedication.
We working in the field today fully understand the responsibilities we have to the thousands of pupils in our schools. We also understand and are deeply grateful for having been given the opportunity to fulfil this task and there is no doubt that our opportunities are there as a result of efforts of pioneers in Jewish Education such as yourself. I am sure that I speak for all when I say that we will do our best to meet the challenges and fulfil the demands placed on us to the
benefit of many children in the future. In so doing, we will remember what you have done.
Naturally your wife Hilda has played a major role in assisting you and none of us are unmindful and have forgotten what Hilda has done for you and for Jewish education - albeit very much in the background. We are all pleased that you will not be lost to education even if the times are such that you will no longer be in a position to serve Jewish Education per se. I know for a fact that I can always call on you and take great comfort from this.
Dear Hilda, Tony, Linda and family,
I was so sorry to hear from Sheryl of the passing of your dear husband, father and grandfather. I know what a pivotal role Norman played in all your lives, and appreciate how grievously you must all be feeling your loss.
Of course, Norman's passing will be mourned by the thousands whose lives he touched, and, perhaps, you can take some solace in that Davidians all over the world will always remember "The Boss", and will cherish fond memories of his headmastership and their association with Mr Sandler.
I shall always be grateful to Norman for his warm friendship, guidance and sincere interest in my career and welfare. I truly regarded him as my mentor, and, in return, he playfully referred to me as his "alter ego". Our relationship is one that I shall forever remember and cherish.
Please accept my heartfelt condolences in your great loss. I assure you that you are all very much in my thoughts.
Yours sincerely
Elliot Wolf
