Mary's father was Paul Thomasson and her mother was Elizabeth Alice Thornley. Her maternal grandparents were Robert Thornley and Elizabeth Welsby. She had a brother and a sister, named Robert and Annie. She was the oldest of the three children. She died at the age of 79 in October 1965 in Bolton.²
