Martha was born on March 17th, 1838 in Netherthong and her christening took place there on October 20th, 1839.¹²

Martha's father was John Roebuck and her mother was Rebecca Tate. Her maternal grandparents were William Tate and Susannah Stocks. She had two sisters named Elizabeth and Eliza. She was the youngest of the three children.
