Lizzie's father was William Nelson and her mother was Clara Ann Mather. Her maternal grandparents were George Mather and Mary Marsh. She had a brother and five sisters, named James, Emily, Annie, Clara, Ettie and Adeline. She was the third oldest of the seven children.
