Joseph's father was George Mullock and his mother was Louisa Lucas. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mullock and Mary Deane. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, George, Frederick, Mary, Eliza, Annie, Elizabeth and Sarah. He was the second youngest of the nine children.
