Gerald was born in June 1911 in Birkenhead.¹

Birth Notes

Gerald's father was Herbert Dutton Mercer and his mother was Mary Moutray. His paternal grandparents were John Robert Mercer and Emily Anne Herring. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Henry, John, Herbert, Alexander, Mona, Alice, Eileen, Emily and Dorothy. He was the fourth youngest of the ten children. He died at the age of 79 in 1990.
