William was born in December 1862 in Whitefield.1  William's father was Francis Mather and his mother was Rachel Whitworth Mills.  His paternal grandparents were James Chadwick Mather and Sarah Charlton. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Francis, Arthur, Thomas, Elizabeth, Emma, Betsy and Sarah.  He was the fifth oldest of the eight children.
