James was the son of Francis Mather (1764-1841) and Elizabeth Chadwick (1766-1826), married 24 Aug 1786 at Bury. He had an older brother Francis Mather (1792-1858).
22 Feb 1825 James married Sarah Charlton at Wigan. (Sarah was born at Chowbent, so Wigan was her parish church)
In 1841, Janes (a Tradesman) and Saran (both 37) were at Whitefield with Ann (15), Sarah (11), James (7) and Elizabeth (4). Also present were Margaret Taylor and John Ratclidde (both 20).
In 1829, James was an Inn Keeper when Sarah was baprised
