Sarah was born in June 1869 in Whitefield.1  Sarah's father was Francis Mather and her mother was Rachel Whitworth Mills.  Her paternal grandparents were James Chadwick Mather and Sarah Charlton. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Francis, William, Arthur, Thomas, Elizabeth, Emma and Betsy.  She was the youngest of the eight children.
