William was born in December 1831 in Worsley and his baptism took place on December 18th, 1831 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Eccles) conducted by Curate Robert Broadley.1 2  William's father was Richard Mather and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Taylor. He had four brothers and five sisters, named John, Richard, James, Robert, Sarah, Esther, Mary, Betty and Susannah. He had an adopted brother named Henry.
