John was born in April 1819 in Worsley and his baptism took place on April 11th, 1819 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Eccles).1 2  John's father was Richard Mather and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Taylor. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Richard, James, William, Robert, Sarah, Esther, Mary, Betty and Susannah. He had an adopted brother named Henry.
