William's father was Andrew Mather and his mother was Elizabeth (Isabella) Holden. His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Rachel Hamer. He had five brothers and two sisters, named James, John, Jonathan, James, Andrew, Ann and Alice. He was the fifth oldest of the eight children. He had a half-brother named Isaac.
