Thomas was born in 1807 in Tyldesley and his baptism took place on April 8th, 1807 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh).1  Thomas' father was Nathan Mather and his mother was Jane (Jenny) Birchenhead. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Matthew, Abraham, Sarah, Betty and Mary.  He was the youngest of the six children. He had four half-brothers and a half-sister, named John, Abraham, Abraham, James and Peggy.
