Thelma was born in 1908. Thelma's father was William Nathaniel Mather and her mother was Etta Terry. Her paternal grandparents were Nathan Cumley Mather Snr and Mary Emma Biscoe. She had three brothers and a sister, named Charles, Lawrence, William and Gladys. She was the third oldest of the five children. She died at the age of 14 in 1922.
