Helen (Ellen) Cunliffe (Cunlive or Cunliff)

1835ish Ellen Cunliffe

Helen, known as Ellen, was born in 1811 in Anderton and her baptism took place on October 17th, 1811 in Rivington.¹

  A family member believes, based on a few US records, Ellen was born about 1811 or 1812.

  The baptism shows mother Ann Cuncliff and no father named.  The abode is shown as Anderton, West, just across the Rivington reservoir (which wasnt built until 1855).

Ellen's father was James Cunliffe and her mother was Ann Gibson.  Her maternal grandparents were Henry Gibson and Margaret (Peggy) Giles. She had a brother and two sisters, named James, Peggy and Mary.  She was the second youngest of the four known children. She had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named James, Alice and Mary.  She died at the age of 75 on April 1st, 1886 in Baltimore County.²

• General Notes

  Ellen's mother was Ann Cunlive (probably Cunliff or  Cunliffe).  She was probably the illegitimate daughter of Ann Cunliffe so may not be the daughter of Ann Gibson and James, although this couple is believed to be the parents due to thre reuse of the name Gibson in one of her children.
  
  Another possiblilty is that Ellen (baptised Mary) is the daughter of John Cunliffe and Elizabeth Bromley who married in 1795 (see Landmantracy tree).
  
  Named "Ellen Cunlive" on marriage.  A family story handed down is "Ellen Conliff worked in a Mill in Lancashire, England.  Her mother died, and her father remarried.  Her step-mother was cruel to Ellen and her sisters wouldn't give them things.  William Mather married her to get her away from her step-mother."
  
  Brother Robert Mather is witness at the marriage is Bolton parish, so this is likely the correct marriage.
  
  In 1870, George and Helen (37 & 35) were a Hotel Keepers, both born England at Baltimore.  With them were Samuel, Nathan and William (24, 22 & 16)
  
  Ellen died in 1886 at Cross Keys, Baltimore.
