Richard's father was David Mather and his mother was Esther Heaton.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Alice Gore. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Alfred, William, William, Joseph, Ann and Sarah.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 64 on October 8th, 1919.

  22 Dec 1872, Richard Mather (DOB 22 Dec 1854, Bolton) was a Tinsmith when he joined the Royal Navy (Official Number 50773) for 10 years.  He appears to have only served of 7 sailings before being discharged 27 Oct 1875 at Sydney, cause "Run", so did he run away?
