Joseph's father was David Mather and his mother was Esther Heaton.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Alice Gore. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Richard, Alfred, William, William, Ann and Sarah.  He was the youngest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 68 on March 10th, 1935 in Bradshaw.²
