Mary was born on May 10th, 1763 in Turton and her baptism took place on June 4th, 1763 at Bank Street Unitarian conducted by Reverend Philip Holland.1 2  Mary's father was James Mather and her mother was Hannah Howarth.  Her paternal grandparents were John (Old Hatter) Mather and Martha Mather; her maternal grandparents were John Howarth and Hannah. She had two brothers named John and Thomas. She had two half-brothers and three half-sisters, named James, Henry, Mary, Martha and Alice.
