John's father was John Mather and his mother was Margaret Salisbury. His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Jane Entwistle. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Ralph, Albert, Robert, Harry, Mary, Margaret and Rosella. He was the second oldest of the eight children.
