John was born in 1808 in Levenshulme and his baptism took place on August 7th, 1808 in Heaton Norris.1  John's father was Robert Mather and his mother was Margaret Robinson. He had three brothers and six sisters, named Joseph, Henry, William, Ann, Sarah, Mary, Elizabeth, Esther and Margaret.  He was the second oldest of the ten children.
