Fred's father was William Mather and his mother was Eliza Graham. His paternal grandparents were Nathaniel (Nathan) Mather and Alice Brooks. He had three brothers and seven sisters, named John, Joseph, Alfred, Hannah, Jane, Polly, Alice, Eliza, Marion and Martha. He was the eighth oldest of the eleven children.
